Combatting Racism and aNTI-BLACKNESS IN OUR COMMUNITIES

The Muslim Network, in collaboration with the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (MuslimARC), hosted a virtual training for community leaders on “Combatting Racism and Anti-Blackness in Our Communities”. This training explored themes of racial formation, internalized racism, and intercultural conflict.

Research published in 2019 showed that in the United States, “92% of Black Muslims believe that there is a lot of discrimination against Black people, compared to 78% of Black Christians and 66% of non-Black Muslims.” An ISPU study also found that Black Muslims are just as likely to experience racism within the Muslim community as other Black Americans are within their own faith communities.

These trends are evident within the New Jersey Muslim community as well. Our 2020 Needs Assessment showed that 68% of NJ Muslims identify racism as a significant community issue and 54% do not perceive the community as inclusive. As community leaders and organizers, we undoubtedly have a responsibility to help alleviate the exclusivity that our Black brothers and sisters face.

Community Discussion on Mental Health

The historical events of 2020 had shook the world, from a global pandemic that forced the majority of the world to come to a standstill, to the shootings of unarmed Black men and women that have led to protests around the world.

During such chaotic and unprecedented times it was important to have a mental health check and ensure that we do not overlook our own well-being. During this event we discussed the struggle of attaining mental well-being during such difficult times and ways to maintain positive mental health, along with a live Q&A session with our audience.

TMN hosted an office celebration to welcome the community to our new office in the Palestinian American Community Center (PACC) and create a networking/collaboration space for attendees.
